Phd Thesis:- Study on interaction between cancer stem cells and mesenchymal stem cells http://hdl.handle.net/10603/199975
During my tenure of Ph.d I was trained by Dr Bikul Das (Forsyth Institute, USA) on Cancer biology which is a unique, interdisciplinary biomedical science that encompasses experimental approaches and didactic knowledge from biochemistry, cell biology, epidemiology, genetics, immunology, microbiology, pharmacology, molecular biology, pathology, and physiology. Further, I was closely allied to the clinical oncologic sciences that are involved in human cancer prevention, detection, diagnosis, and treatment. My area of Interest is associated with deep link in between Stem Cells and Cancer Recurrence. I have investigated the progression of oral cancer after theraputics to invasive and metastatic stages that accounts for the overwhelming majority of cancer deaths. The findings concluded that these aggressive cancer cells exhibit some molecular and cellular features similar to the stem cells. But, Stem cells are life savers whereas Cancer Stem Cells kills life. During my Ph.d from Gauhati University and fellowship training at Kavi Krishna Laboratory, Guwahati Biotech Park, IIT, Guwahati, India I did the study where the exposure of the cancer cells to oxidative stress (chemotherapy) induced stem cell like cancer cell state (cancer stemness state). These CSCs were capable of surviving under hypoxic conditions within the Oral micro biome gaining chemo resistivity. This brought to the conclusion that the oral microbial flora may favor or inhibit tumor growth. https://www.researchgate.net/publication/318799950_Abstract_2681_Oral_micro_biome_enhances_stemness_in_oral_cancer_cells_by_activating_Toll_like_receptor_signaling. Hence, it is important to develop novel experimental approaches to study the role of oral microbial flora in oral cancer stemness (self-renewal and undifferentiated state of cancer stem cells) . Further, to better understand the phenomenon of Cancer recurrence the interaction in between the Cancer Stem Cells and The Mesenchymal Stem Cells was to be studied. During this period the mechanism which we came across was “Altruism” which means ‘Self destruction for the wellness of others’ came into the view. It was found that the CSCs induced a similar altruistic phenotype in human bone marrow (BM) derived stem cells (hematopoietic, mesenchymal and endothelial cells). The altruistic reprogrammed BM cells then facilitated tumor growth, as well as resist the toxicity of oxidative-stress inducing anti-cancer agents https://www.researchgate.net/publication/305669708_Abstract_920_Migratory_cancer_side_population_cells_induces_stem_cell_altruism_in_bone_marrow_mesenchymal_stem_cells_to_resist_therapy_and_enhance_tumorigenic_potential_of_non-tumorigenic_cells . Hence, it is a sad story, because, if what we found is true then the cure for cancer is going to be tougher than what we could imagine. It is a tough goal, but there must be some easy solution out there that we have probably missed so far.
Research specialization:
To understand the mechanism of cancer recurrence, and the complex biological systems that underlie its development. Further, if possible to identify new ways of treating the disease by taking a close-up look at the fundamental mechanisms at work within cells.
Other research projects, if any: Conduct Telemedicine and monitoring of Home Quarantine population during COVID-19 pandemic lockdown in association with Pratishruti cancer & Palliative Trust and The Superintendent of Police, Dhemaji District. Conduct Telemedicine and monitoring of Cancer and Tuberculosis patients in association with Kavi Krishna Telemedicine center, Sualkuchi, Assam.
